Hand to God is a dark comedy play written by Robert Askins. The play premiered off-Broadway at the Ensemble Studio Theatre in 2011, and then later moved to the Lucille Lortel Theatre in 2014. The play centers around a young man named Jason, who is struggling with the recent death of his father and finds solace in a Christian puppet ministry group. However, when his puppet, Tyrone, takes on a life of its own and begins to speak and act on its own accord, chaos ensues and the play delves into themes of sexuality, faith, and mental health. Hand to God was met with critical acclaim and was even nominated for five Tony Awards in 2015, including Best Play. The play has since been performed in numerous theaters across the globe and was also adapted into a film in 2019.
